This guy saying "hi" in the best QB in ACC race.
Coastal Division is king. The question legitimately is–can the anyone in the Atlantic defeat a Coastal team? I really don’t know. Also, where did the defense go? Duke/NCSU and FSU/GT were arcade mode games where the defense seemingly had a couple less players on the field.
Rank (LW)….Team……………………..Record
1)…(1)…Virginia Tech Hokies…………………5-1(3-0 ACC)
34 unanswered points. When the Hokies are rolling, who can stop them? VT RB Ryan Williams continued to shine with 159 rushing yards and a TD. The defense shared the stage too here with 3 forced turnovers that forced BC to change QBs in the game. What a statement the Hokies made going into their huge Coastal matchup with Georgia Tech.
2)..(2)..Miami Hurricanes………………………4-1(2-1 ACC)
Miami would trail 3-0 early, but pour it on the rest of the game 48-16 over Florida A&M. Harris was not an especially sharp 16/24 for 217 yards, 2 TDs/INTs. The Canes RB duo of James/Cooper took a backseat to Berry/Chambers with 200 yards and 2 TDs.
3)..(3)…Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets…………..5-1(3-1 ACC)
What an odd game these Jackets played with the Noles. Good news is the offense is rolling, but the defense is a liability. They were pitiful. Those 539 yards given up are just cartoonish and it looked worse in real time. Changes-a-plenty need to be made before facing the Hokies next week.
4)..(5)..Wake Forest Demon Deacons…4-2(2-1 ACC)
The Deacs have quietly put together a little run with their homestand wins over NC State and Maryland consecutively. The offense is firing on all cylinders as Skinner would throw for 360 yards and 4 TDs. Wake Forest could really stake their claim for the Atlantic at Clemson next week.
5)..(4)..Boston College Eagles………………….4-2(2-2 ACC)
Wait, did we say Atlantic Division favorites? Nah, we meant they were going to be held scoreless for 3 quarters and lose by 34 to fall to .500 in the ACC. All is far from lost for the Eagles–games like this happen quite frequently to team entering Blacksburg. I am not sure what was gained in pulling Shinskie and shaking his confidence–he is the guy that will have to be in place to lead the Eagles to an Atlantic Division title.
6)..(10)..Duke Blue Devils…………………………3-3(1-1 ACC)
Hard to describe how dominant Duke was on offense if you did not see it, but here goes. In the 49-28 Blue Devils’ win, Duke QB Thaddeus Lewis would throw for 459 yards and 5 TDs. At one point, Duke was 9 for 11 on 3rd downs in the game. Lewis chucked it 50 times and completed it 40…silly numbers.
7)..(7)..Clemson Tigers………………2-3(1-2 ACC)
Bye week was a rough one apparently with angry fans voicing displeasure, but they didn’t lose–didn’t look ahead of the bye to Wake Forest. That game could determine another Atlantic Division contender.
8)..(6)..North Carolina State Wolfpack………….3-3(0-2 ACC)
They almost allowed one player to amass 500 total yards. NC State’s defense had zero answers for Thad Lewis and co. while the offense put up a respectable 28 points at home. Losing by 3 TDs to Duke will never be explainable, but give them a break–Lewis did have a great game(no excuse though in reality).
9)..(9)..North Carolina Tar Heels………………………4-2(0-2 ACC)
That FCS opponent was placed well. The defense led the way with 6 turnovers in the 42-12 win. Get a couple weeks before facing off with FSU on a Thursday night.
10)..(12)….Virginia Cavaliers…………………..2-3(1-0 ACC)
Groh fever! UVA RB Mikell Simpson would find the endzone 4 times in the 47-7 win over the Hoosiers before leaving with an apparent head upper body injury(either head or neck). ‘Hoos QB Sewell would have an oustanding 20/30, 308 yard, TD peformance. UVA looking to keep up the Coastal’s domination of the Atlantic and jump out to a 2-0 ACC record next week in Maryland.
11)..(8)..Florida State Seminoles……………2-4(0-3 ACC)
There were a lot of bad defenses this week–and FSU was not the worst, but they are here because of failed opportunities. GT tried to give them the advantage several times in the second half with turnovers and the ‘Noles just could not capatalize. Basically, you have a TD lead at half, they fumble three times in the second–you have to win that game no matter how bad your defense is.
12)..(11)..Maryland Terrapins……………………2-4(1-1 ACC)
The Terps got hit by a Mack truck in Winston-Salem as the Deacs were on. Maryland would make a late, not-very-exciting comeback to get it within 10 with a minute and a half to go. They really were out of this by the end of the 1st quarter, but did not play terrible. Maryland has a chance to get back above .500 with a win over UVA next week.
