OTB’s ACC Power Poll: Week 8(Atlantic Conquers Edition)

October 24th, 2009 4 comments
Come to me ACC, come to me.

Come to me ACC, come to me.

Atlantic Division went 2-0 vs. the Coastal this week. Oh,  aaaand the entire ACC has been turned upside down. Georgia Tech is up–Miami is down. BC goes out of conference and loses–but also loses ground in conference to the Tigers. This is the ACC and I’m not sure I would like any other way–solid football this week.

Rank (LW)….Team……………………..Record
1)..(T-1)…Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets…………..7-1(5-1 ACC)
The Coastal Division is yours, Georgia Tech. The game of football has 60 minutes–the Jackets took 42+ of that in the 34-9 dominant victory over Virginia. Early on, Virginia kept it close, but in the late 3rd quarter into the 4th–the ‘Hoos had no answer for big runs, scores, and overall ground dominance by Georgia Tech. The Jackets punishing duo of Allen and Dwyer combined for 228 yards and 2 TDs.

2)…(T-1)…Virginia Tech Hokies…………………5-2(3-1 ACC)
No three way tie now, but the Hokies still need the Jackets to go down now. There’s a game coming that might just open it up for the Hokies.

3)..(5)..Clemson Tigers………………4-3(3-2 ACC)
There’s no mistaking it–this is a different Clemson team post-the-apocalyptic-Maryland-loss. Clemson has put up 75 points on the board in the last two wins over quality opponents. The Tigers had huge games from several contributors on offense including TE Michael Palmer(5 catches for 74 yards and a TD), RB C.J. Spiller(300+  total yards and 2 TDs), QB Kyle Parker(326 yards and 3 TDs). Clemson, the Atlantic is yours.

4)..(T-1)..Miami Hurricanes………………………5-2(2-2 ACC)
Miami should have won this game. I really do not fault the Canes for this loss–because these games happen all the time. Clemson was playing with their hair on fire and Miami was just not fully with it. Kicking to C.J. Spiller, not covering Spiller as a receiver, getting waaaaaaaaaay too conservative on the last drive, taking the game out of Harris’ hands in OT–the list goes on and on for errors, but these games happen–the real issue is whether the Canes come to play the rest of the season.

5)..(4)..Boston College Eagles………………….5-3(3-2 ACC)
For a game that I watched intermittently between the Clemson/Miami game greatness, it looked like BC was tentative early, strong in the middle, and made key mistakes in the late minutes of the game. BC was not going to win with only scoring 16 points against Notre Dame–they had to get more on the board and did show some flashes of brilliance, but it’s still a loss–Clemson ripping the Atlantic from them didn’t help either I wouldn’t imagine.

6)..(6)..Duke Blue Devils…………………………4-3(2-1 ACC)
Duke Blue Devils’ football is above .500 in conference. Let that sink in, folks. Per typical, Duke had zero rushing game–Thad Lewis chucked it 43 times, successfully 30, for 371 yards and 2 TDs. Duke’s D really stepped up in holding off Maryland most of the second half with only a one possession lead. Big game with Virginia coming up next week.

7)..(10)..Florida State Seminoles……………3-4(1-3 ACC)
The ‘Noles are on the board with an ACC win finally. They would rally from being down 24-6 in the 3rd quarter with a combination of UNC’s ineptititude, offensive brilliance, and key stops. Christian Ponder went all Christian Ponder with a 33/40, 395 yard, and 3 TD performance. FSU gets NC State for another win next week.

8)..(7)..Wake Forest Demon Deacons…4-3(2-2 ACC)
Navy threw all the passes out of the playbook against the Deacs and won 13-10. Literally, they did not pass once. Good job, Deacs–way to make us proud.

9)..(8)….Virginia Cavaliers…………………..3-4(2-1 ACC)
The festival of Grohtober has halted with a crushing 34-9 defeat. He kept them in it for a half atleast, but the Jackets had almost two decades of frustration to unload on the ‘Hoos. How quick a turnaround from the exhillaration of two straight ACC wins could be blown up with a loss to Duke next week.

10)..(9)..North Carolina Tar Heels………………………4-3(0-3 ACC)
Let’s start with the good news, the offense looked better. They were running misdirection like crazy and using their skill players effectively. Bad news, Yates is your QB. The defense shares some blame with breaking down late, but UNC needs a better QB.

11)..(11)..North Carolina State Wolfpack………….3-4(0-3 ACC)
Wow, NC State is bad(no need to change this).

12)..(12)..Maryland Terrapins……………………2-6(1-3 ACC)
Terps lost to Duke…which isn’t as bad a thing this season, but still, how did they beat Clemson again?!?!?!

  1. Good List B. Rink…

Georgia Tech is wonderful shape to represent the coastal. Navy ran all over Wake Forest, so the Duke game might actually be more dangerous for the Jackets.

Clemson has put themselves in position for an Atlantic title with their great win today. C.J Spiller is amazing.

  2. I need to proofread my comments better!

  3. B. Rink says:

Thanks, AAS. Agree on both points.

  4. cuorange says:

One thing about the ACC…you never know who is going to show up on any given weekend..
